I would like to use the sidebar to click to go to new pages for the topic title. The heading 'Birthdays' should click to take you to a new page where
the members can post the date of their birthday. Or the heading 'Recipes' should click to take you to a page where members can post their own recipes.

Ok, I think I know what you mean.
In your sidebar code in your footer where you set the headings, rather than just putting "Birthdays", put in a hyper link, i.e. <a href="http://URL TO GO TO HERE">Birthdays</a> that will make the section titles clickable, all you need to do is workout the URL to where they need to go.
