customizing sidebar

Posts: 4 4 Aug, 2008 02:04	Tags : None Hi, I just saw something we would really like on our sidebar on another board http://rvmssanctuary.yuku.com/directory We really like the way it looks and the information it offers to members. It is at the very top of their sidebar. We also like the white background inside the box - our background is green. We would also like to add it to the top of our sidebar. http://ivorygardensdidboard.yuku.com Is there a way we could add that? Can you help. We are so afraid to play around with the sidebar, because often we have goofed up the whole board trying to change or add anything. Thanks, Felicity

Is this the right board? I see: Upward scrolling marquee. Something about the moon. Bravenet guestmap button. Some sort of quote of the day.

Yes, it has an upward scrolling marquee (I guess you call it), but when I logged in, I saw MY name immediately, welcoming me - that made me feel pretty good - I liked that. What is a bravenet guest map button? Don't know about that - but would be cool if you could put a link directing them to the introduction subforum - or heck right to the New Topic button. hmmmm - or maybe just to the Introduction Forum. Okay, so I said a white/tan background or some kind of font color and font that really showed up on the green. As it is, we can't see the scrolling marquee for new members or announcement - the letters or so teeny and light. What would be the use of having someones' name come up welcoming them if it didn't hit them in the face like it did when I opened that board. I don't even think anyone reads our scrolling marquees on the side unless they get out their specks. Anyhow, the thing that I like the very, very most was that MY name showed up when I logged in. Now how cool is that? Sorry to bother you all but they sent me over from the lobby telling me that you all were gurus waiting with your skins on to help. And..... I screw up the whole board every time I touch that sidebar. argggg I think it hates me. Will you help me. Do you know what I am talking about? Felicity

Posts: 692 5 Aug, 2008 00:54	Yes, it can all be done but can we take a step back from it all and look at the sidebar alone. IMHO, it looks very bitty and not clean and well-defined. You mentioned white in your original post and I'm wondering if you wished to make the whole sidebar white. While the boxheadings match your board, the size and shape of them in the sidebar don't look so good with that background. I think what I'll do is replicate your skin on my testboard and try to tidy it up, which will include standardizing font, size and color; Make it a solid colored background to match your board (for now); widen it by 20px and narrow the board by 10px; put a border/s (depending on look) on it; move "Special Announcements" to the top and accomodate a welcome (username) script, there will also be a lot of html tidy-up to do and I may strip some unnecessary code from it. However, that will all be tomorrow. If you want it white, let me know and if you have any other ideas, let me know them too. I'll get something together and you can have a look at it and tell me what you think.

Posts: 6 5 Aug, 2008 01:55	Hi, Yes, you are absolute right. We have all worked on it so hard trying to make it look nice despite the difficulty with the color scheme. Yes, the background would probably look great, but maybe not white, but the color of the font in the Title and Mission Statement. Everything else you wrote sounds good. We can't thank you enough. Just wondered if we could put the smilies list in a scroll box where the smilies could be stopped and drug into messages. That would be also totally cool. If we are limited on scroll boxes, we could lose the Newest Member one. If this can be done, can it be at the very bottom. We also noticed on that same website http://princessbarhangout.yuku.com/ that they had the 'highest poster of the day.' Can this be set up to automatically update during the day or is that something they are manually keeping up? It would be really nice if it did update during the day. We would love that. Don't you think that we come up with some good ideas. It's just too bad we don't know how to implement them all. You are great. Also, one more bitty little favor - could you let us know what you do, so we can learn as we go? Felicity
