Posts: 683 4 Nov, 2006 17:50	Tags : ie6, ff20 If someone could give me a hand, I'd be eternally grateful. I've got IE6 and FF2.0 on this computer here and none of them work properly at the moment, speaking of frustration.. IE6 Last Tuesday I changed the buttons in my toolbar and added some. I had done the same thing with my FF browser and never had a problem there. Since the moment I changed the buttons I have not been able to launch IE6 without freezing. At first it would work for about 2 minutes, long enough to go to yuku (and then I blamed yuku for the freezing, imagine that). But then it got worse and it would freeze seconds after I opened it. The freezing happens every single time. I have to use the Ctrl+Alt+del to get out of there. Yesterday I had just enough time to reset the browser so that the buttons went back to their default settings. It didn't make a difference. Today I can't use the browser at all anymore. The second it opens it freezes. What the heck did I do and how do I fix it? Should I completely uninstall it and download it again? If so, what's the proper way to uninstall it so that nothing of it remains on my computer? FF2.0 All the boxes in FF2.0 are transparent. (Like when I right click on something and a box comes up, or when I open file/edit/view, etc...) This is really annoying because every time I click on something I also click on whatever is underneath. Yes I know I can use the keys instead of the mouse but still, I don't think this should happen. Is anyone else having that problem? Is there a way to fix it? Thanks

Posts: 222 4 Nov, 2006 22:17	Chris I would do a check list have you defragged? Run you virus program? Cleaned out your cookies? All the usual things we have to do when computer's having a headache. Though I think you will be wasting your time as I really get the feeling Windows has become corrupted. I would do all the above and then you might have to start thinking about a reformat. What O/S are you using? How is the rest of your computer behaving, is it slow, takes time to open programs, etc? No comfort this but I often change my tools around but I have never had what you are describing here, and you're talking 2 browsers going haywire?

Posts: 388 4 Nov, 2006 23:17	Uh huh. Well, that's just weird, Chris. Never heard of that happening. Anyway, here's some suggestions: 1. Whenever having problems, the first thing to do is a virus scan. Make sure your anti-virus program is up-to-date and do a thorough scan of your computer. If you find no virus: 2. You can try the maintenance. Defrag, disk cleanup.....that may help. Sometimes files gets scattered around the hard drive and causes a few problems. If after this and you still have problems... 3. IF you are running Windows ME or XP, you have the Restore option. This will restore your computer to a previous setting and sometimes fixes the problems. (PM me for more info on that.) 4. Honestly, you cannot safely un-install IE 6 without causing some major problems to your operating system. They are 'joined' at the hip. (That's why Microsoft was hit with those lawsuits a while back.) You could try searching for updates at the Windows Update site. Warning Microsoft no longer gives support nor updates for Windows 98. So if you're using that operating system, you may not get any updates. 5. Very important question here: Did you install a program on the computer before or after changing the buttons on your IE 6? If so, this could be the problem. Sometimes, un-installing the program will solve the problem. Not always, but sometimes. This could also affect Firefox. After all of the above has been done, and there are no changes, then the only thing you can do is re-format and re-install the operating system. As for Firefox, I have no earthly idea why that happened. Did you install an add-on before this happened? If not, then it's a problem within your operating system itself. (see above....re-format and re-install OS) Or you could try re-downloading Firefox. Sometimes that works... _________________ IF you do a virus scan and happen to find a virus, your anti-virus software may tell you how to remove the virus. If not, you can go to the anti-virus company web site and find the 'cure'. If you have difficulty, PM me here at Yuku and I'll try to help.

Posts: 683 5 Nov, 2006 04:59	Sigh, things have gotten a lot worse. So I can't open IE6 without crashing and I can't keep it open long enough to make any changes, but now FF is giving me major problems as well. I'm on my other computer at the moment. This is what happened.. Just before I logged off this afternoon I got the all too familiar error message.. this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down, etc.. I got this message while using FF and so far I have only gotten this message with IE, this was the first time seeing this message with FF. I had to go so I logged off and turned the computer off. I turned it back on a little while ago. Logged on and opened FF. I was on line for about 5 minutes when the error message popped up again. I kept clicking it off and it kept coming back. So I clicked on IE which wouldn't open at all. Instead I got an error message from IE as well. I can't remember exactly what the message was about but it was an error message I had never seen before. Something about an internal error, it popped up in a small square box. After clicking it off I just got showered with error messages and turned my computer off. Now to answer the questions.. I customised the IE toolbar on Tuesday. The problems started right after that and have gotten gradually worse. I didn't download anything at all nor did I open any attachments in my email (I never do that). The ONLY thing I have downloaded recently was FF2.0 I also downloaded the alexa and the google toolbars but that was a couple of weeks ago and I didn't have any problems afterwards. My OS is win98 I highly doubt that I can get my computer up and runnig long enough to use a virus scan. This really sucks. Thanks for the tips though. I think I am going to switch towers and connect the system I'm on now to my bigger screen and use that for a while. How is the rest of your computer behaving, is it slow, takes time to open programs, etc? It was behaving fine until this afternoon. Although I have to say that after I installed FF2.0 my pages loaded extremely slow for a few hours. It was so slow that about 8 pages out of every 10 I clicked on timed out. Things got gradually better and they were back to normal yesterday. I remember posting a topic on here titled "This program has performed an illegal operation". this was a while back when I was getting those error messages a lot. Back then I took my tower apart, cleaned it out and checked the connections to my hard drive. After that I never got another error message until today. This really feels like a bummer. I have so much information in my computer that I don't have backed up (including a big chunk of my second book, all my email addresses, several writings I'm working on, etc.. ) it would be a disaster if my computer just died on me. Yes I know it is stupid not to back things up. You'd think I would have learned my lesson after seeing everything wiped off my computer once before. Now before I stop whining, one more question. This is probably an incredibly stupid question but I've got to ask.. Suppose that my computer has a virus. What would happen if I connected the tower of my other computer to the monitor, keypad, amplifiers, printer and mouse of my affected computer, would that be damaging, or can a virus only hide in files? I guess what I'm asking is.. if it had a virus would it be safe to just take the tower away and connect another tower or could this be damaging to the new tower? Posts: 2691 5 Nov, 2006 07:45 yuku global moderator	When I read this yesterday I searched a bit in FF, sometimes someone will have the same problem. But I have not found it yet. Anyway what you see with the error is new to FF. They now have a box like MS called "talkback" I think. It sends your errors off to FF in the same fashion as the IE one. I know because my FF crashes alot, lolol. You should be able to run your virus scan in safe mode. Although it does not sound like a virus to me. Cannot hurt to run it. When you boot up, before the MS stuff loads it should say hit F1 or F8 (I can never remember which it is and I think it is different depending on your computer). Generally what I do is just mash F1 over and over before the MS bottom bar starts loading, lol. Anyway, if you can catch it before MS loads you can boot up in safe mode. There you can run the virus scan. You can also use your control center and could uninstall FF2 from there. IE6 would be harder, but there is a way. You could "turn it off" from the part of the uninstall software spot that is just for MS. Also, do you have a disk for your Norton, or did you download it? If you have a disk you should be able to run it from there, bypassing MS too...but you have to change your bios to go to that drive first.

Posts: 19 5 Nov, 2006 08:07	Hi Becky I did run a virus scan just now. OMG I had forgotten how long it takes to scan.. I am currently on my "bad" computer using IE gasp and I think that I am getting somewhere although I really should be getting to bed it's 2 in the morning. While my virus scan was running I started to think.. what is different for me that this would only happen to me? The only thing I could think of is the Dutch dictionary. Nobody here has it other than me. This also reminded me of the fact that I did download something.. I downloaded the dictionary to enable the Dutch spell check in my browser. Now I was blaming my problems on IE but I installed FF2.0 very shortly after I customised my IE toolbar so it is quite possible that FF is the problem and not IE. I always open FF first when I go on line, so if FF messes something up in my computer than it would not be a surprise that IE has problems as I am already dealing with possible FF problems when I open IE. So after thinking about all that I decided to log on and open IE first to see what happens. Sure enough it didn't freeze at all and it works just fine. I think the right thing to do is to uninstall FF and then install it again without the Dutch spell check. If it comes down to uninstalling FF then I think that I'll go with FF1.5 again when I reinstall it. I've had enough problems to last me a while. But now I'm not sure if the problems are even caused by FF because there were errors on my C drive so I guess the first thing to do is to try FF again before I throw it out the window. I ran a scan disk on my C drive and opted for "repair errors automatically". So after the scan it said that errors had been found and repaired. I deleted all my cookies, cache, passwords, everything (and boy I had a heck of a time logging in to yuku after that). When that was done I ran a full virus scan. It "detected" 5 suspicious files but none of them were viruses or trojans. 3 files are "adware-alexa" and this is what it says about them.. Program Characteristics McAfee(R) AVERT™ recognizes that this program may have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized administrator has knowingly installed this application. If you agreed to a license agreement for this, or another bundled application, you may have legal obligations with regard to removing this software, or using the host application without this software. Please contact the software vendor for further information. It then said that it is not a virus and doesn't have to be removed. The 4th file is adware-Pacimedia and seems to have something to do with media player. My scanner didn't give much info other than that it is not a virus or a trojan. The 5th file is funnier than hell, lol. Its threat name is "Free Scratch Cards". It is not a virus or trojan but it is labelled as a "potentially unwanted application". It is a program that claims to allow users to win money. The application is installed in an Active X control on a website. It said that it isn't dangerous or anything but I got instructions on how to remove it, will do that tomorrow. I also cleaned my tower and checked all my connections. So my next step is to launch FF and I really dread it. If the error message comes back I will uninstall FF right away and then install FF1.5 again, this time around without the Dutch spell check. Heh thanks for your time, I've been long winded.

I am leaving it on for now and am hoping they will have some updates that help me soon . I rather like FF2, but I don't much care for crashing. It has a funny option now though. When it crashes you can have it bring you right back where you were when you log on.

I noticed that this talkback thing has been added to my add ons. Whodunnit?? I posted at the FF help forum about the boxes being transparent. The answer was.. if you are using a theme go back to the default theme, but the thing is.. I was using the default theme to start with. So I took Chris's advice and got a theme. The first theme was not compatible with FF2, so I had to get another one. Now that I am using a theme the boxes are no longer transparent. But the problem is that I really, really don't like this theme at all and it was the only one I could find that's compatible with FF2. I'm sure there are more but it's 4 in the morning here and I'm getting too old for this. The buttons of the theme are ugly and huge. I've been on with FF for like 2 hours now and I haven't seen a single error message so I'm thinking either it was my hard drive which was repaired while running the scan disk or cleaning my tower and checking my connections to the hard drive solved the problem. Dang I really need to go to bed.

Posts: 2691 5 Nov, 2006 10:13 yuku global moderator	I like the Noia extreme one. But I think that might be the one you don't like as the home bar icons are a bit bigger. At least they match the del.icio.us buttons cause they are big too. But you can make them smaller. Just go to View, toolbar, customize. Look at the bottom and there is a checkbox for "smaller icons". I really like this set though as the background on the toolbar is a gradient grey...looks silver and the scrollbars are a very cool shade of blue that turns purple when you use it. So, mostly simple but with a little pizazz in the scroller. It also has a tiny chocolate chip cookie for the web developer bar cookie icon, lol. I love that! Chris you could be right about downloading that dictionary? Sometimes even I question how one program someone creates can be compatible for the thousands of different o/s they must cause some folks problems. I've had that on occasion and like you it really drives you nuts till you find the culprit. Anyway I hope it has all settled down again now, fingers crossed In answer to your question about using the keyboard, etc for the spare tower no virus can be passed on by these gadgets. It's when you take files from one Tower to another Tower that can happen and the rule is still the same "run your virus program when you download files from the net or from another computer". Oh and Chris just want to add so as you know this (may as well have all the bad news in one go - right?) the next version of F/F will not be compatible with wins98. That's a bummer even for me as my other computer runs 98 I am going to miss that o/s though I do find now I quite like XP I didn't at first. wonders when did that change?

Posts: 683 5 Nov, 2006 10:23	I am (was) using Orbit Grey Custom. But now I went back to the default theme and guess what.. the boxes are no longer transparent!! I know I'm NOT crazy because I kept checking earlier today and whatever I clicked on in the boxes also enabled whatever was underneath, that's a fact. All's well that ends well I guess. Now I want a firefox staff member to come over here right away and feed my chickens at 7 in the morning. It's 4.30 now, how am I supposed to get out of bed?? And it's all firefox's fault!

When I logged on to the internet, the second my connection went through, FF launched itself, it has never done that and I didn't change any settings in that regard. I checked the FF help forums and guess what I found.. someone else had one of the problems I had with FF, this person is on dial-up and everything started loading way slow after installing FF2.0 Since FF launched itself at startup I couldn't open IE first. When I opened it after FF was already in use it froze again, back to square 1. The help forums are loaded with all kinds of problems, several people have asked how to go back to FF1.5 and a few have reported that all their problems were solved after going back to 1.5 so I have decided to go back to 1.5 Also, apparently using a combination of FF2.0 and google toolbar is like begging for trouble, the two just don't go together. Although I have the google toolbar in IE, it is installed on my computer and maybe that's what's causing all the trouble. I'm off now going to download 1.5 again.

It's so hard when there are actually so many potential causes for things that you have to do so much cross checking. I'll admin I am using both 2.0 and 1.5 (I can use both because I am on a Mac) because I have one client site that simply won't open in FF2. It crashes on load.

If you had a virus, it would be on the hard drive of the old tower. As long as you didn't transfer files from the old tower to the new tower, you will be fine. Connecting the mouse, monitor, keypad, etc. to a new tower shouldn't hurt the new tower...as those parts are plug and play parts. Honestly, Chris, the more I read here, the more it sounds like Windows 98 has become corrupt and very unstable. That does NOT mean that you have a virus. Windows 98 was like that....unstable. Full of bugs too. The best advice I can give you is to back up all of your personal files on that tower and then do a complete format and re-install of Windows 98. That should clear up the problems.

Posts: 683 5 Nov, 2006 21:39	Oh joy, I am so happy! Everything is back to normal. I got shocked when I read your post wine, but everything is back to the way it was, so obviously it was FF2.0 that was causing the problems. I accidentaly installed FF1.5.0.7 instead of 1.5.0.1 oh well. My Dutch spell check and my themes got disabled because they are not compatible with this version but my other extensions work. After installing and launching it I opened my IE and it didn't freeze. Just to be safe I did uninstall the google toolbar a few minutes later. My pages load again the way they always did and just coming here I can already notice a huge difference. FF2.0 was slowing my page load down considerably. I don't know about anyone else and mind you this is just my opinion but I'd suggest to wait until FF2.0 has some of its bugs straightened out before downloading it. Just a glance at the FF help forums will tell you that there are still a lot of different problems with this version on a lot of different systems. Downloading it feels like a gamble, you might draw one of the winning numbers and you might not. After 4 days of much aggravation with everything that went wrong all I can say is I'll miss the spell check but I certainly won't miss dealing with the problems. It's going to take an awful lot of convincing before I want to try 2.0 again.

I did say days back and I think it was to Becky when she was having trouble that I think this latest version of F/F has been rushed out. I think because M/S was very close to releasing IE7 could have made them rush it out and very unprofessional of them they usually are very guarded and I hope they go back that way. Our other computer running wins98 is not being updated as husband said that wins98 may be getting to old for all these new software gadgets. Glad I listened to him otherwise I could have been in your boat. NOW GO GET SOME SLEEP!! Chickens can scratch for their own breakfast like my ducks at present time cleaning up my garden of snails - you should see them after an inch of rain overnight! PS The snails that is not the ducks and I hate that sound they made when you step on them.
